Abstract:
This paper proposes the use of the Automatic Identification System and Machine Learning to analyze the activities and operational conditions of vessels positioned on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Panama Canal. In this stage of the study, the objective was to analyze by means of Exploratory Data Analysis, the data from the Automatic Identification System, to identify the activities, operational conditions and positioning of vessels in both slopes. The preliminary analysis showed that 55‥ of the data corresponds to hazardous cargo and container vessels, the average speed of the vessels in the underway state using the engine is 1.10 knots. This suggests that vessels are possibly moving between locks or performing transit maneuvers. Whereas, for the moored and anchored navigation states, the average speeds are 0.43 and 0.42 knots respectively, suggesting that the vessels are stopped, either moored or anchored, waiting to initiate transit. Summarizing, through the Automatic Identification System, the preliminary characteristics and behavioral patterns of the ships are known, serving as a starting point for the selection of the Machine Learning algorithm that will lead to a more detailed study to know the levels and trend of emissions from ships.
